NYC lawyer gets 'unhinged' email from 'entitled undergrad' - what's your worst networking experience?
Main Post: NYC lawyer gets 'unhinged' email from 'entitled undergrad' - what's your worst networking experience?

Did not happen to me directly but there was a rather famous incident which happened around 7-8 years ago. Some guy who was going to start at one of the big4 as a grad went to his university's recruitment fair and got the emails of a bunch of the female recruiters there.
He then proceeded to send them an email, all the recruiters were CC'ed to one email, describing how he was this up and coming hotshot who was gonna work for big4 and thus they should go out on a date with him.
This email was then forwarded thousands of times until even the mainstream media caught hold of it and published articles about it. He became the laughing stock of the professional circles within my city.
The guy was then put on indefinite leave by his future employer until it all blowed over.
In Need of a NYC Tenant/Housing Lawyer
Main Post:
I'm looking for a personal recommendation for tenant/housing lawyer that has a history of winning financial judgements versus management companies. In short, my rent-stabilized unit has a management company that is clearly violating the warranty of habitability for tenants in NYC by not providing hot water (just took yet another cold shower), and by not providing a front door to the building that actually locks. This has been an issue for 4 years (!) and I've paid rent on time and in full every month. Now, I'd like to sue for that amount paid back to me as well as damages. Have all the issues documented as well as multiple 311 and building violations. Any recommendations would be very helpful - prioritizing those with personal experience with the lawyer and actually winning a judgement in housing court. Thanks all!

Estate Lawyer Recommendation in NYC / Queens
Main Post:
Hey, trying to help with my mom's (in her 60's) estate planning and had a bad experience with one lawyer already (sloppy, didn't actually complete transferring assets into the irrevocable trust, generally having to be chased for any work). So far most of the lawyers are also pushing for irrevocable trusts for Medicaid purposes and it feels a bit like a too good to be true situation? They also want to start the work from scratch claiming the original work is unusable. They are generally advocating for putting all assets into an irrevocable trust and having one of the children be an administrator (not really going through the potential complications of having 2 controlling parties vs one, how to pick the one administrator, or the risks of an irrevocable trust in general). There is an added complication of some properties that may be sold within the next few years, and the lawyers are saying that this is not a problem at all in an irrevocable trust and we shouldn't wait to put them in - is this true? While it's good to plan ahead, I'm worried my mother is in pretty good health still and the irrevocable will lock her into a permanent inflexible situation.
I've been trying to urge her to consider a revocable trust instead, or maybe having both, to protect herself a bit and I haven't been able to find a lawyer who can actually counsel us on why this is a good/bad idea or the implications. These lawyers all have dozens to hundreds of excellent 5 star reviews - am I missing something here?
Am I overthinking things or are the lawyers are overselling how easy/no consequences irrevocable trusts are?

(NYC) How to find a good estate lawyer without any connections?
Main Post:
I'm trying to find a lawyer that can write a will or set up a trust (not sure which is better in our situation) for my parent's assets, specifically their properties. We don't know any friends/family that have used an estate lawyer before so we can't go just ask someone personally. What's a good way to find a trustworthy lawyer that we can sit down with and set all this up? Preferably closer to the Staten Island area, where should I start?

Nyc wage theft lawyers?
Main Post:
I’m now 99% sure my employer is taking if not half, majority of my tips. A lot of lawyers pop up when I Google but I’ve never consulted a lawyer abt anything so just wanted to ask if anyone in nyc has good personal experience with a wage theft lawyer out here, thanks!

Note that it's legal to redistribute tips from servers to other non-management employees, but they can't keep them for the restaurant, or give servers' tips to owners/managers.
The US Department of Labor and the NYS Department of Labor both handle wage theft complaints. If they confirm a violation, they'll seek to recover your wages, either through a settlement, or through a lawsuit. They don't charge a fee; they're supported by taxpayers. Personally I'd opt for the US DOL; either could handle it, but tip allocation is regulated by federal law, and they have a lot of experience with these sorts of cases.
US DOL: How to File a Complaint
NYS DOL: Filing a Labor Standards Complaint
A private labor attorney is an also an option, but would cost some money, either up front, or as a contingency fee (percentage of your winnings). They'd might take the case for a contingency fee if you're owed a couple thousand dollars or more, but the amount depends on the attorney. They typically take 33% of a settlement reached before a trial starts, or 40% of a settlement or court award after a trial starts.
Employment Lawyer where to start?
Main Post:
Hey I'm looking to contact lawyers about my case. How should I do that? Should I attach a bit of the evidence in the email? Should I redact anything?
I'm in Brooklyn but can travel, and it is a billion dollar company.
Thanks!
Top Comment: NY lawyer here, but not an employment lawyer. You can contact the NYC Bar Association Lawyers Referral Service here: https://www.nycbar.org/get-legal-help/ +1 917 909 8615 Alternatively, if you already know a lawyer personally, ask them for a referral. We typically know lawyers in other areas of practice that we trust and send clients to.

I bought a property from someone (a 2-family) and when i bought it, he had the 3 bedroom apartment rented out room style where there were 3 separate people living in each room. Not knowing that this was a big issue, i continued renting it the same way. When covid started and all three people stopped paying rent, I have been trying to get them out, first working with one of those cheap eviction lawyers who did not put the effort to get them out (meaning when their city appointed lawyer asked questions my lawyers didnt even respond)... I just spoke to a new lawyer (not a cheap eviction lawyer) and they said it could cost tens of thousands in lawyer fees to get them out... has anyone ever fought an eviction case without a lawyer? I am considering this but wanted to know is it even feasible.

Looking back at your post history. They offered to leave last year for 30K. Let’s say you negotiated that down to 25K. You would have a year of rent at this point at 4K per month. So you would be up 23k right now and not have a headache. Honestly I would probably just give them the money.
Failing that Find yourself a decent attorney and see what their opinion is. I’m sure it will cost you $500 to sit down for half an hour to an hour and get advice.
Whatever you do. Do not give them any money until they have all of their belongings out and walk out the door. Immediately before leaving the premise change the locks and lock all the windows.
I have a relative who is stubborn too. They have an empty apartment right now that needs 60K worth of work. They refused to put the money into it even though they have it. It’s now been empty for six years. They’ve now lost out on 140k in rent and still need to do the work on the place instead of just dealing with the issue at hand, having a nice renovated unit and being up 80k.

Main Post:
Long story short ... I recently had to start an eviction process for my tenant. She was two months late on rent. I decided to hire a lawyer to make the process a little easier for me. Last Friday she was served with a 14 day termination letter. Yesterday she moved out but still has some belongings in the apartment ( couch , Air conditioner etc .) Rent A Center came to pick up the couch today but no one was there and she hasn’t answered their calls. I’m giving her one more day to get the rest of her belongings before assuming that she has officially moved . I plan to text her tomorrow to ask if she has vacated the premises and ask for my keys back. My lawyer claims that I need to continue with the process and get a court order to get possession of the apartment back . This is to prevent the tenant from suing me and claiming that “I forcefully evicted her”. Is this true ? Or is my lawyer trying to get more money out of me ? Any advice on how to continue ?
Top Comment:
In NY you should follow your lawyer’s advice.
If she vacates and voluntarily returns the keys to you within the notice period, then you won’t win a writ of possession. It’s moot. But you can still pursue a claim for the back rent. If you’ve already filed the case, then I would keep the hearing date.
